Imagine that you're a brand new father, and your daughter just had her first birthday party. You're picking up all those helium balloons, and you also notice a gift wrapped box on a table in the living room. You think to yourself, "Hey, this is for my daughter. It's wrapped up nice and pretty, so it MUST be something she really wants! I'll open it later…"
And then your daughter walks into the room. She sees that you have her gift in your hands.
"Is that for me?" you ask her innocently. Little Susie nods her head. "Can I see it now?" she asks.
"Sure!" you say with a smile, as your wife comes into the room to help clean up the party mess. You joyously tear off the wrapping paper to reveal…well, what looks like a doll or something similar. "It's a doll!" you announce, matching your wife's grin.
"Is it for me?" Little Susie asks again.
"Of course it is! Who else would it be for?" you reply.
Susie isn't buying it though. She knows what she saw on her birthday table, and she knows what the party was all about - her turning one year old!
"But Daddy…" she starts off with, "I am one already." Your wife steps in to help out. "You see Susie," says Mommy, "we had a little misunderstanding here. Daddy thought that you wanted that gift to be for someone else. You see, he was opening your present for someone else!"
"But it's wrapped up nice and pretty," Susie replies catching onto the obvious deception.
"Yes, Daddy was mistaken. The gift isn't for anybody else. It's for you." She doesn't totally buy it, but she's satisfied enough to get on with things - at least until this gift thing comes up again about 6 months later!
Now I just have to get this analogy across to my wife after I've already told her the story multiple times…
It's amazing how the simplest of ideas can germinate into something much more. In the case of DreamWorks' "The Boss Baby," it was a picture book written and drawn by Marla Frazee. At first glance, this picture book looks like a typical children's storybook. There's a monkey, there's a bear and the one and only baby. (Yes, that really is what the title says: The Boss Baby!)
Of course, as we all know from experience - no matter how many times we read to our kids - we're never too old to be entertained by simple stories about babies and their antics as they grow up! (I mean come on…they really don't do very much as they go through life!)
